spontaneous attempt to understand classpect #389258923479235739425729348

Your name is A-FLYLEAF and you are occasionally struck with the INEXPLICABLE URGE TO UNDERSTAND CLASSPECT. Every time you revisit the idea, you end up kneeling before the great classpect keyword chart and INTERNALLY CRYING.

Today you decided to top off your musings with AN ACTUAL CHART, and a condensed version of your current aspect understanding. (You’re pretty sure you’ve done this before, and each time it looks a little different. But what the fuck.)

A circular chart of the Homestuck aspects, via Hiveswap’s Extended Zodiac.

  1. Breath: “I’m gonna do what I want!”/Blood “I must serve my people”
    (freedom vs responsibility)
  2. Life: “Something wrong? I’ll fix it”/Doom “Something wrong? That sucks”
    (healing vs compassion)
  3. Light “I must know All the thing”/Void “I don’t know shit”
    (knowledge vs mystery)
  4. Time “Things end”/Space “Things begin”
    (decay vs creation)
  5. Heart “Who I am inside”/Mind “The mask I wear”
    (inner vs outer self)
  6. Hope “You can do it!”/Rage “No, you can’t!”
    (possibility vs limitation)

With every iteration of my “understanding” I probably stray further from canon, but at the same time it’s basically another fun character alignment thingo and I sure ain’t claiming to be an authority, so it’s all in good fun, yeah?

The gist as I get it is that, rather than a strict personality indicator, classpect describes your best self, achieving your full potential to shape your world as only you can. This can mean doing things yourself (Active classes) or supporting others (Passive classes). Aspect = what you work best with + class = how you work best = classpect aka God Tier aka you are the ultimate! It’s you!

Aside from that, classes tend to confuse me if I think about them too long, especially the ones that involve the opposite aspect (looking at you, Destruction and Stealing classes). I still cannot classpect characters for shit, especially characters who aren’t mine, but I rarely have luck with my own either. But OH WELL here’s a dump anyway, feedback/corrections more than welcome ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

I would mostly agree with everything, just with one nitpick:

> Life: “Something wrong? I’ll fix it”/Doom “Something wrong? That sucks” (healing vs compassion)

I think the actual division is something more like "Power vs Restraint" or "Power vs Sacrifice" or the slightly less poetic "Power vs Loss of Power." Life encompasses UNBOUNDED OPTIMISM and the power to affect reality applied IN ALL DIRECTIONS, whereas Doom restricts, channels, and stores up Life's energy (e.g. through rules, or individual restraint), and sometimes releases all of its power in a massive sacrifice.

(...it's kind of weird to be talking about classpect in the year of our lord 2019. It used to be one of the fandom things I cared most about, but now it's just one of many systems I like to use for cross-fandom analyses.)

Yeah, Hope is what you *believe* is possible while Life is what you actually possess the power to do. Life's "power" just comes with... secondary connotations, you could say, of wanting to *use* power, since its complement in Doom isn't actually "lack of power" so much as "restraint."
