Found a very cool community whilst Reading Page-hopping: [community profile] little_details! It reminds me of those script[profession] blogs (e.g. [tumblr.com profile] scriptmedic); ask a niche question, get a niche answer.

One of my favorite things is art (and writing and other media types) where you can tell the artist is really into what they’re making, and hyper-specific knowledge is a big part of that :D And yes this very much includes non-“professional” subjects; there was a piece of fanart I saw on, uh, not-Twitter a while back (although like hell if I can find the link again, alas) where the artist had like, these super in-depth headcanons for how the characters would play Dance Dance Revolution, what songs they’d be best/worst at for all these specific reasons, and I’m just reading it like. ????? there’s a niche for that????? The more you know!!

Basically, I might not have a clue what niche-indulging artists are on about, but it feels like the passion bleeds through and I am giving them the biggest thumbs up from the sidelines. Reeling this back to the boost, QnA communities like [community profile] little_details make for excellent reading.

Shameless bragging: Last night I finally, finally, finally finished a scene I’ve been stuck on for over!! a month!!!! lies down and dies.

There’s probably still stuff I’m going to tweak with it later (writing emotional moments is my burden, I always feel like I either focus too much on making An Upset Scene (as opposed to a scene that happens to be unfortunate) and it turns unintentionally melodramatic, or I go in the opposite direction and the ensuing $behavior comes out of nowhere), but!!! multiple false starts later I have officially reached the point of I Am Satisfied For Now and Thus Done Fussing With This, so.

🥳. . . !! 8 chapters down, 3 more to go, babeyyyy
(well technically 4 but the last one’s basically an epilogue & I don’t expect it to change too much from the first draft, so it prooobably won’t take long….)

Today’s song is brought to you by a post that’s making me go [interrobang noises]. I found the particular cover linked below years ago, though, during a brief Vocaloid/UTAU kick. There is something deeply fascinating to me about people tuning voices like instruments—although I think the biggest mindfuck is that the company behind Vocaloid also manufactures motorcycles and pianos. Now that’s what I call range!

Lil smorgasbord of a post today:

Quick shout-out to [personal profile] vriddy’s Dreamwidth tips tag, there’s a bunch of stuff here that I wanna go through more thoroughly later >:Oc Also linking this comment with more nifty-looking resources, while I’m here.

The current Sunshine Challenge prompt is a flower canonically associated with my current Favorite Character of All Time, hello????? (“current favorite of all time” = I am prone to getting hyperfixated on media/specific characters for a prolonged period of time, and even after my active interest moves on they will continue to be very special to me. “blorbo” is the slang du jour for this, I think)

I don’t know if I’ll actually Do Something for that, seeing as I’m gonna run through the game again soon and it will almost definitely devour my every waking thought anew, but impeccable coincidence here.

Back on the Dreamwidth note, oh my god, it took me this long to realize I can still effectively follow tumblr people here via RSS. (No tags, alas, but still!!)

Explore > Feeds > Add Feed > https://blog-name.tumblr.com/rss, and it seems to work with specific tags too: https://blog-name.tumblr.com/tagged/tag/rss

I do kinda wish I could hide that on my Dw profile (if I had the options I’d make the entire People tab & Reading page private; I know this isn’t exactly Social Media™ but I’ve gotten used to that info being something only the blogger knows, feels weird to have public*), but more importantly: Dreamwidth! can be! a glorified! feed reader!!!! I’ve been wanting to figure out/use RSS for ages but never felt like digging through the various reader programs, figured I didn’t want to keep up-to-date on enough things to warrant it anyway, but like. Bam, surprise, Dw has been here all along. 🤯, honestly!!

edit: Found more nifty info on how RSS feed work around here!

[citation needed] for this entire spitball, but come to think of it, I wonder if public ~circles from (presumably, I have zero firsthand experience with it) the LiveJournal era is a big part of why those nice “mind your own business” norms rose in the first place? Like, you don’t want other people to judge you for what you read/who you talk to, do unto others, all good.

Obviously this did/does not apply to Twitter but that’s its own hellscape.

Idk! I only ever used Tumblr, where (I think?) likes used to be private by default and, although the default theme had a Following section in the sidebar, it wasn’t hard to get rid of! So the norm I got used to was that that info was none of anyone else’s business. Not saying this as a better/worse comparison or judgment, just thought it was an interesting difference. I wonder if private defaults make people more or less cagy about their interests?

To je sve! (That is all!)
(…I will probably keep gratuitously sprinkling (probably-)wonky Croatian through my posts, it’s fun to show off. “no bilingual people talk like that” however a-flyleafs georg, who is learning language adn butchers hrvatski a thousand times a day,)

I haven’t really felt the need to do a media/link sharing roundup lately BUT if you wanna know what I’ve been learning in graphic design, this series covers basically everything and then some. It’s super neat! If you have any interest in design or logos or moodboards or the like, check it out.

Guess which sucker finished college (part one)? This one. Guess which sucker got their personal website up on Github proper and hasn’t touched it since? …Yeah.

If you look at absolutely nothing else in this post, please appreciate Hte Art: this abomination I cobbled together last week, and a quick animation practice hand from earlier today:

Anyway, the fun part: LINKDUMP AND DISCOMBOBULATED RAMBLING.

There’s a small handful of things I’ve wanted to write about since my last post, but none of those thoughts have come together into a coherent standalone ramble just yet. March kinda passed in a blur, but some media highlights:

  • Jack Stauber. Holy shit, Jack Stauber!!! Was introduced by a friend and this was the first video I watched, which among other recent uploads made for one hell of an impression. He makes these trippy VHS animations using (and often combining) surreal claymation, live action, MS Paint-looking animation, and some of the most bizarre music I’ve heard in a while. Consider it a “creator chose not to warn” experience. If that sounds up your alley, dive the heck in. Pick a video, any video; there’s no continuity.
    • Also, not everything is chaotic glitchiness! He’s got some full-length songs too, several of which are used in <1-minute videos. Of the calmer songs, “Today Today” is hands down my favorite. But if you want to spend a good few minutes wondering what the fuck you just watched, consider “Lima Bean Man” and (volume warning) “Shattered Molars”. For a dubiously-healthy tonal mix, also check out his series for Adult Swim, Shop!
  • On a more mainstream note, the new Mary Poppins was whimsical and I’m sure it satisfied the nostalgic yearnings of people who grew up with the original. Personally I couldn’t unsee/hear the chimney sweep guy as “wow, that’s Lin Manuel-Miranda Hamiltonmusical!”, the 2d sequence just made me sad Disney’s not making fully 2d movies anymore, and I will forever be annoyed on Travers’ (the original Mary Poppins author) behalf courtesy Saving Mr. Banks. But anyway.
  • *Also saw Captain Marvel, which did its job as a superhero power fantasy But With A Woman. If I think back on it too long I start poking more and more writing holes in it, but it was fun while it lasted and Carol and her “best friend” were in lesbians fight me on this.
  • BUT. FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING MARVEL courtesy Into the Spiderverse, and yes I jumped on the bandwagon real late with this one but W O W. WISH I’D SEEN THAT IN THEATERS. It really felt like a high-budget passion project from start to finish and I would LOVE to see more movies with experimental cgi animation like this!!

In other news, I’ve finally succumbed to using markdown to write posts. Prior to this I’ve been using HTML in a word doc Because I CanTM; links were fun to code, as you can imagine. Still, that whole Jekyll/GitHub thing uses markdown for the main content, and while I have no problem reading HTML it is less of a pain in the ass pulling up the guide + the recommended WYSIWYG editor.

Oh, and as for why I’m talking code again, and the main reason I finally logged into Dreamwidth in the first place? Personal! website! is now! a thing!!! \o/ And it only took like five hours of hyperfocus! Granted, I don’t quite know what to use it for, but I’m gonna put that off give it a day or two. If it still looks Acceptable with fresh eyes, I’ll finally get that sucker on Github for easier updating.

…Not coincidentally, I am also facing a minor crisis to the tune of “do I keep my Professional Art Portfolio completely separate from my Internet Shenanigans or say fuck it and unite it all under the banner of a-flyleaf,” so that’s been fun. It is a bridge that needs to be crossed sooner than later. BUT FOR NOW that sure is a thing that finally got coded! There’s a marginally more interesting preview to the left; click for fullsize. Images from Duolingo’s amazing April Fool’s offer and the webcomic Morally Grey.

…I feel like thre was supposed to be some kind of concluding paragraph to this but it got lost in the midst of coding shenanigans. Whoops.

*EDIT 7/30/19: Oh hey, clearing out some old notes and found the post-watch thoughts! Here ya go.unedited and raw )
